Legal aid is being withdrawn from most family law disputes at the end of March 2013. This is due to cost cutting measures introduced by the government under the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO). Due to the Easter holiday the last day for legal aid to be granted for many cases will be Thursday 28 March 2013. If legal aid is granted before the deadline it will normally continue until the case is concluded provided you remain eligible. But new legal aid applications after 1 April 2013 will not be entertained unless the case is one for which legal aid remains available.
From a practical point of view this means that anyone wanting to resolve a family law issue with the help of legal aid should act now. Delay could mean losing the opportunity to get legal aid.
